    Passive immunisation of goldfish with the serum of those surviving a Cyprinid herpesvirus 2 infection after high temperature water treatment

    Herpesviral haematopoietic necrosis of goldfish caused by cyprinid herpesvirus 2 (CyHV-2) can be controlled by raising water temperature to a virus non-permissive temperature of 34℃. Consequently, the goldfish can survive and acquire resistance to the disease; the underlying mechanism of acquired resistance, however, remains unclear. In this study, we investigated serological changes in the surviving goldfish, with a focus on their humoral immunity, and examined whether sera of the surviving goldfish conferred passive immunity to naive goldfish. Levels of the anti-CyHV-2 antibodies in 8 of the 9 survivors measured via ELISA were higher than those in control fish. Neutralising antibodies were detected in the sera of 2 survivors, but no direct correlation was observed between ELISA optical density value and neutralising antibody titer. Passive immunisation tests showed that recipients injected with the serum containing neutralising antibodies showed higher survival rates than the control group. The sera from 6 other survivors showed no effect on the recipient\u27s mortality regardless of anti-CyHV-2 antibody levels. These results suggest that neutralising antibodies can contribute to acquired immunity in survivors, and other protective factors, including cell-mediated immunity, may work in the survivors that show no detectable neutralising antibodies

    Cerium features in kilonova near-infrared spectra: implication from a chemically peculiar star

    Observations of the kilonova from a neutron star merger event GW170817 opened a way to directly study r-process nucleosynthesis by neutron star mergers. It is, however, challenging to identify the individual elements in the kilonova spectra due to lack of complete atomic data, in particular, at near-infrared wavelengths. In this paper, we demonstrate that spectra of chemically peculiar stars with enhanced heavy element abundances can provide us with an excellent astrophysical laboratory for kilonova spectra. We show that the photosphere of a late B-type chemically peculiar star HR 465 has similar lanthanide abundances and ionization degrees with those in the line forming region in a kilonova at 2.5\sim 2.5 days after the merger. The near-infrared spectrum of HR 465 taken with Subaru/IRD indicates that Ce III lines give the strongest absorption features around 16,000 A and there are no other comparably strong transitions around these lines. The Ce III lines nicely match with the broad absorption features at 14,500 A observed in GW170817 with a blueshift of v=0.1c, which supports recent identification of this feature as Ce III by Domoto et al.     Beneficial effect of branched-chain amino acid supplementation on glycemic control in chronic hepatitis C patients with insulin resistance: Implications for type 2 diabetes

    Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) improve disorders of albumin metabolism, quality of life, subjective symptoms, and prognosis in patients with chronic hepatitis. However, it remains unclear whether they improve insulin resistance. We examined the effects of BCAAs on glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity in patients with chronic hepatitis C and insulin resistance. Individuals with a definitive diagnosis of chronic hepatitis C and insulin resistance were eligible for participation. Eligible participants were randomly assigned to the BCAA group or a control group. Participants were then crossed over to the other treatment for a further 12 weeks. Baseline clinical features, laboratory markers, fatty acid levels, and insulin sensitivity, assessed with oral glucose tolerance tests and a hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp, were also examined before and 12 and 24 weeks after the beginning of the study. Of the 27 patients who completed the study, 14 began in the BCAA group and 13 began as controls. There were no significant differences in glucose metabolism parameters or lipid profiles between the groups. HbA1c values were improved in 10 patients and worsened or remained unchanged in 17 patients. The only predictive variable for change in HbA1c was the baseline Matsuda index: the lower the index, the greater the improvement in HbA1c values. BCAA therapy did not have adverse effects on glucose tolerance or insulin sensitivity in patients with chronic hepatitis C and insulin resistance. Moreover, it had a therapeutic effect on HbA1c values in patients with marked peripheral (primarily muscle) insulin resistance. © 2012 Elsevier Inc

    Spatial and temporal evolution of stress and slip rate during the 2000 Tokai slow earthquake

The definitive version was published in Journal of Geophysical Research 111 (2006): B03409, doi:10.1029/2004JB003426.We investigate an ongoing silent thrust event in the Tokai seismic gap along the Suruga-Nankai Trough, central Japan. Prior to the event, continuous GPS data from April 1996 to the end of 1999 show that this region displaced ∼2 cm/yr to the northwest relative to the landward plate. The GPS time series show an abrupt change in rate in mid-June 2000 that continues as of mid-2005. We model this transient deformation, which we refer to as the Tokai slow thrust slip event, as caused by slip on the interface between the Philippine Sea and Amurian plates. The spatial and temporal distribution of slip rate is estimated with Kalman filter based inversion methods. Our inversions reveal two slow subevents. The first initiated in late June 2000 slightly before the Miyake-jima eruption. The locus of slip then propagated southeast in the second half of 2000, with maximum slip rates of about 15 cm/yr through 2001. A second locus of slip initiated to the northeast in early 2001. The depth of the slip zone is about 25 km, which may correspond to the transition zone from a seismogenic to a freely sliding zone. The cumulative moment magnitude of the slow slip event up to November 2002 is M w ∼ 6.8. We calculate shear stress changes on the plate interface from the slip histories. Stress change as a function of slip rate shows trajectories similar to that inferred for high-speed ruptures; however, the maximum velocity is 8 orders of magnitude less than in normal earthquakes.Part of this study is supported by JSPS Postdoctral Fellowships for Research Abroad
